It is possible for you to keep a pet squirrel if you provide the right care for it. With some research, and the right items, you could keep one. I support your decision in keeping a pet squirrel.

Possible?

Sure. But when I was young we tried to raise some baby squirrels who's mother had been run over. The babies just didn't make it long. A squirrel is by nature a wild animal an though it's kinda cute it also can't be house trained and has big long teeth that would make you bleed like a stuck pig.

My advice, get a dog and name him after your favorite squirrel.

Pet squirrels are legal in SOME states and places. Most states ban them as being kept as pets.

More importantly, most squirrel species are feral and vicious. Grey, red, whatever, they tend to be sweet as babies but become extremely vicious once they grow up. Chipmunks make better pets than most but are still rather wild.

Really, the only species that make decent pets are the flying squirrels. The most commonly kept as a pet is the Southern Flying Squirrel. If you buy it CAPTIVE BRED (be sure of this, lots of people steal wild squirrel's babies to make a buck which is disgusting) from a very young age and bottle raise it, it can become an extremely sweet pet. This being said, they are highly complex and difficult to care for and very time consuming. They can climb anything and will sit at the top of your curtain pole shredding your curtains and generally destroying everything they can get their teeth into. They are cute and funny, but a lot of work.

The other species that make OK pets are ground squirrels, specifically prairie dogs. Again, you need to buy these guys very young, and captive bred for them to be good pets, but they are another option for you if you don't specifically want a tree squirrel. You can get other species of ground squirrel as pets, like the richardson's ground squirrel but they aren't really as friendly as prairie dogs.

For further info on "pet" squirrels, this is the place to go: http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/index.php it has a section devoted to pet squirrels.

I realize these guys are cute but if you like them that much you will make the right decision for the animal . The squirrel does not want to live with you as opposed to where it naturally lives and plays . It wants to be free and ith it's own kind not caged , that is cruel to do to a wild animal of any kind, no matter how " good of a life you think it will have" . I rehabbed wild life for 23 years and believe me there is a reason it's called wildlife. It isn't fair to the anima to force it tolive where it doesn't want to be . Take the time to really think about it from the animals point of view and you will make the right decision I'm sure . why not volunteer for a local rehabber where you live , that way you get to help when they are small and need help but they get to be released then and live as they want , best of both worlds ! Call your game warden or police for list of rehabbers close to you .

its possible to keep a squirrel but it doesnt mean its completely safe or right. i love tigers, its possible to tame and keep tigers, they are naturally wild animals like squirrels, but it does not mean i have to have a tiger because i love them so much, more then you love squirrels. why would you make the squirrel unhappy by making it live in a cage with people just for your entertainment, when it would rather be wild and free, they aren't domesticated animals, and still have wild in them if you raise them or not. the closest to a squirrel you will get that is a pet is a sugar glider, and you know it will be happy in its cage or being petted, if you care for it right.

It is possible to tame a squirrel, but they are naturally wild animals so it might be difficult. My uncle raised a squirrel and it ended up turning on him and biting him soo it's probably not a good idea.

Yeah, you can have one. My dad did for a long time but the neighbor shot it because it bit him to many times, my dad said they can be pure evil. Their wild instinct never leaves, even when born into a home.
