Question:
Will raccoons go after bunnies?

I am looking at getting some pet rabbits and I want to keep them outside. A lot of the cages that I have seen for outside have tops on them. I was just wanting to fence off a section in my yard to put them in. They would have a house to go into at night but the whole area itself wouldn't have a top. We don't have any coyotes or anything but we do have raccoons. Will they get in at night and bother the bunnies. I have a dog that stays in the backyard but we is very good with small animals and I think would keep out most other animals. So is it a good idea or not?

Yes, they will go in if not to get the bunnies, then to get the bunnies food. Make sure your bunnies and their food are locked in the cage at night. Rabbits should also not be in an open top (or place with any opening) unsupervised in the event a stray dog or cat or something comes along and gets in.

I'm sorry this happened :( I have a bunny and I would be heart broken if anything happened to her. Yes, a raccoon could catch a bunny and take it up a tree. Raccoons can be very vicious animals, especially when they're hungry. Yes, rabbits can run very fast, and that may be how your bunny survived in the past. But, sometimes a bunny may freeze when scared. Or, the bunny may have been distracted and didn't see it's predator coming. My parents had a 2 month old outdoor kitten that killed a full grown wild bunny. The bunny was bigger than the cat. Although the situation was sad and gross, my mom said that she couldn't help but be amazed that a kitten was capable of that! There's some things in nature that baffle us and is unexplainable.

I'm sure it's possible but I've never heard of raccoons kidnapping bunnies to eat them. They are scavengers. I'm guessing the real culprit was cats. Growing up, my cats would catch wild bunnies and bring them in our yard, I'd do my best to rescue them but a few didn't make it. I hate to say this... But the fight you heard could have been after the fact. The cat could of already had the bunny and the raccoon came to scavenge which caused the 2 to fight over it. Sorry about your loss..

Yes. I had a shredded rabbit in my yard this am. I checked the security cameras and it caught 2 raccoons killing a little bunny. Got it good. Removed the head.

Yes they will kill and eat domestic rabbits who are easier to catch than wild rabbits. The thing about raccoons is they like the heads. They will reach into the cage and grab the rabbit by the head and try to pull them through the cage bars. Raccoon attacks on rabbits can be a gruesome sight because when you wake up in the morning you have headless rabbits in a cage. You should have a double fence around the rabbit hutch with 6 inches between the outer fence and inner so the raccoons cannot reach through to the rabbit portion.

BTW, everybody in the lower 48 states has coyotes. Even in cities. I work at night and drive home late and trust me, you don't know what's in your yard at night.
