I've used baits in the past and they always seem to work. They are filled with little green pellets and you just keep replacing them until they are no longer being eaten. I'm not sure how "humane" this is but it sure as hell works. They are also easy to place in tricky spots so your other animals can't access them. I think they're called Selleys rat bait....?
Another good point is they go away to die...no little mouse bodies to dispose of!

The problem is that some mice are just too light to trigger the regular traps. They can eat all the bait without setting the trap off.
Sticky traps may or may not work depending on just how sticky they are and how much pressure the mouse actually puts on the glue.
I never liked the regular traps or the sticky ones because the mouse always seemed to suffer too much in the process. Coming downstairs to a half dead mouse is not how I like to start my day!
Recently however we've been using an electronic mouse/rat zapper. It basically traps the mouse inside and zaps em with about 20,000 volts!
It may sound cruel but the mouse dies very quickly and there is no mess to clean up. You don't even have to see the dead mouse if you're squeamish, you just empty the trap straight into the trash can.
We've been using our Rat Zapper with dog biscuits of all things and it's working pretty good. I think we got the majority of the mice but still get the occasional one.

I'm not a fan of sticky traps either but it sounds like they are your only option. The mouse is too light to trigger a regular trap. You can put poison in the middle of the trap with the bait if you don't want to kill the mouse yourself. Otherwise you'll have to throw a live mouse away which is a highly unpleasant prospect.

Sticky traps. put some peanut butter or jam or something in the middle of the trap. tape the trap down so the mouse doesn't drag it off somewhere and wait.Hope you get it. I hate those bloody things too.
