Breeders. Plain and simple. Just a quick Google search of the animal you want to buy followed by "breeders" or "for sale" will get you to people who sell them. You will not find a cheap or free monkey, if that's what you are looking for. The cheapest you will find for a Capuchin is about $5,000. PLEASE do not think these monkeys are children. If that's what you are wanting one for please don't do it. We have primates and go through many different breeders when acquiring more depending on price, availability and the species. You have to also look for laws on federal, state and local levels and see if they outlaw or require anything before you get the animals, as most do. A good site to use is PrimateLaws.com to see your state laws, you can email them and they will look for your local laws for you.

If you are looking to get these types of animal PLEASE do your research, they are a full time commitment. They are quite a bit to keep up (about $10,000/yr per monkey). They require LARGE enclosures, not small backyard cages. Caging depends on the animal, but one of our outdoor primates enclosures is 60ftx60ft and 20ft tall and cost nearly $25,000 to build. These animals are strong, wild and most times dangerous. Security of yourself, animals, and the people around you is a top priority and the strength of these animals should never be under estimated.

"Jen" your answer is completely wrong. Monkeys are not illegal to own in the USA. There is no nationwide ban on them. Only some states and local government outlaw them. Also you are comparing a 200lbs. chimp to a 5-10lbs monkey, a monkey can do nowhere near as much damage as a chimp. Finally you mention monkeys being pulled out of the wild to be pets, WRONG! They are born here and have not been imported since the 1970's. Know your stuff before you write it on here, after all its called Yahoo Answers not Yahoo Opinions.

In some states they are illegal. Although the previous answer is right, there are a lot of things about monkeys most people are not aware of.

Firstly, you cannot have just the one, these are social animals, and suffer great psychological stress if kept alone.

Secondly, they cost a ton. And not just to buy. Marmoset gums and monkey pellets are not a complete diet, they need a broad range of food and are expensive to feed. They also need access to UV, preferably from natural sunlight which means a large, secure garden enclosure. You can provide UV lighting indoors. But you will need a cage. Leaving a monkey to run around your home will end in disaster, they will hurt themselves or you with electrical sockets, sharp things, anything remotely dangerous. Monkeys can rip light wire apart so you're looking at heavy duty wire of the sort to contain large parrots. Where I am from no-one would be allowed to house a capuchin in an enclosure less than 18 feet long. Do you have that sort of room? You'll need a custom build enclosure and it will cost thousands.

Then there's the aggression. Baby monkeys are cute, cuddly and so clingy. Once they hit sexual maturity they get aggressive. Even hand reared monkeys (and hand rearing is very cruel and damaging to the monkey, by the way), communicate partly through aggression and small monkeys can still do a lot of harm. Capuchins require a license in my country because they are considered dangerous. You might not think so, but they have strong hands and powerful teeth, they have the ability to wield weapons, and they have the smarts to know how to hurt people, where to hit them to hurt the most. Monkeys have a track record of going for your face, your eyes, your genitals.

They rub pee and poo all over their hands, you'll get this all over you. They masturbate openly in front of people. Their poo is VERY human like and stinky and NO you cannot keep a diaper on them all the time.

I would think very carefully about this. Most people keep their monkeys until they hit sexual maturity them dump them off on an exotic animal rescue because they cant deal with it. Monkeys are a full time job, forget having a holiday again as pet sitters dont have the experience for monkey care. And capuchins can live 50 years. Its a huge commitment. In most cases its not a good idea.

I don't really think so.I searched online for one to but had no luck.

But make sure you really want a monkey, they can be hard to handle. You have to feed them and treat them as if they were a baby. But DON'T get a big monkey.Lot's of people are very badly injured and some even killed after being attacked by a big monkey.

You also have to pay for their supplies, bills, and some monkeys cost up to 7,000$ or more.Make sure to get the monkey before you pay or it may be a scam! Also search online for monkeys in the USA and you should be able to find a few society's with them, but you may have to pay extra to have them shipped or you may have to go pick them up!Good Luck!!

First of all, it is ILLEGAL to own a monkey as a pet in the United States. You may think this is unfair, but it's not. Monkeys are WILD animals, no matter what you see on television, any monkey that may seem docile to a human could turn on them at any moment if they feel threatened. They are nothing like cats or dogs, you can never fully tame them. I used to be like you, and think it'd be cool to own a monkey, but didn't you see that story about a year ago, where that monkey litterally ripped part of the face off of it's owner's friend? A lot of monkeys are endangered or threatened too, so you risk endangering the species even further if you purchase a monkey. Just imagine being pulled out of the jungle, the only home you know, only to be tossed in a cage then shoved into someone's home so they can try to tame you. Doesn't sound so fair when looked at from the monkey's point of view. Please rethink adopting an animal like that. Some animals are not meant to be domesticated.

bad idea. if you want something exotic, and cute and companionable, try a sugar glider, or a parrot.
