Do you have a muzzle for the dog? Can you make a muzzle tie that can be wound around the muzzle three or four times and tied behind the back of his neck?

Or just get someone to help hold the dog in a leg lock--standing up with him facing out from between their knees and their hands on his muzzle.

If you paint the tick with rubbing alcohol, clear nail polish or I believe even vasoline to stop it's ability to breathe, they usually come out. But if you do have a bit of time to actually grab hold of it, then take the tick out yourself instead of coating the body.

If it stays on the dog it could be days before it drops off, and if you miss where it goes, it could find you or the dog again later. It's best to flush the tick down the toilet.

You have to get the tick off. It's getting bigger because it's filling itself up with your dog's blood. A little tiny tick can grow to the size of a walnut if you let it stay. The worst thing that can happen is if is a female and has babies. Your poor dog will have not just one tick, but a whole lot of them.

Have someone help you hold the dog down and pull the tick off with tweezers. They also make things called tick spoons at the pet store, but you really don't need them. Try and get the whole head of the tick, but if you can't make sure you rub the spot where the tick was with some triple antibiotic ointment.

your dog tried to bite you?

ticks carry disease, it needs to come off and wont on its on.

you need a tick remover or even tweezers, if you can't remove it, have someone hold the dog while you remove or vise versa.

there is always your vet.

EDIT

"To remove an attached tick, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers or special tick removal instruments. These special devices allow one to remove the tick without squeezing the tick body. This is important as you do not want to crush the tick and force harmful bacteria to leave the tick and enter your pet's bloodstream.

1. Grab the tick by the head or mouth parts right where they enter the skin. Do not grasp the tick by the body.

2. Without jerking, pull firmly and steadily directly outward. Do not twist the tick as you are pulling.

3. Using methods such as applying petroleum jelly, a hot match, or alcohol will NOT cause the tick to 'back out.' In fact, these irritants may cause the tick to deposit more disease-carrying saliva in the wound.

4. After removing the tick, place it in a jar of alcohol to kill it. Ticks are NOT killed by flushing them down the toilet.

5. Clean the bite wound with a disinfectant. If you want to, apply a small amount of a triple antibiotic ointment.

6. Wash your hands thoroughly.

How to Remove a Tick Please do not use your fingers to remove or dispose of the tick. We do not want you in contact with a potentially disease-carrying tick. Do NOT squash the tick with your fingers. The contents of the tick can transmit disease.

Once an embedded tick is manually removed, it is not uncommon for a welt and skin reaction to occur. A little hydrocortisone spray will help alleviate the irritation, but it may take a week or more for healing to take place. In some cases, the tick bite may permanently scar leaving a hairless area. This skin irritation is due to a reaction to tick saliva. Do not be worried about the tick head staying in; it rarely happens."

To begin with, ticks are like fleas, they are everywhere. Secondly, I have used Advantrix successfully but my daughter says it doesn't work on her dogs, so you might want to try something else. If you removed the tick, I hope you used tweezers and removed the head as it usually separates when the body is pulled from the dog. This can cause infection. I would be very careful where you let your dog sleep and certainly would not allow her on the bed. The best advice you can get is to take her to the vet.

How Big Can Ticks Get

It will fall off eventually, when it has become engorged with blood. The problem is, though, that they put dangerous bacteria into your dog's bloodstream before they fall off, and I believe when they pop they reproduce, so they will have a lot more ticks.

Simply, do NOT burn the tick, or add vaseline. Vaseline will kill the tick, but nowhere NEAR fast enough. Burning the tick will stress it out, and cause it to spit up some of that dangerous bacteria I just told you about.

If you dont want to touch it, get tweezers. Grab it as close to the bottom as you can, and pull STRAIGHT out. Quickly. Do not twist, just go.

After the tick is out, either flush it or drown it in a disposable cup of soapy water (the former is faster). Then, get some tick and flea stuff, like Frontline or Advantix.

The tick will just burrow deeper into the skin until it gets infected. YOU HAVE to get it out some how. If you need to take him to the vet- do it! This could be a very serious medical problem.

Have somebody hold the dog while you light a match, then blow it out and quickly touch the match head to the tick and hold it on there until the tick backs out. If you just pull the tick off, it can pull the head off, which is buried deep in the dog's skin. It can get infected that way.

My dog had a tick - we had thought it was a scab until we looked closer. I ended up getting it off by just pulling it off. My dog didn't enjoy it and neither did I, but it got the job done.

Ticks need blood to survive. It will stay there because it can 'smell' your dog's blood supply. It may sound cruel, but you have to get the tick off your dog---& 100% intact. If it's burrowed it's head in your dog's skin to drink his blood and you pull it off, the tick's head will stay in your dog, and cause a terrible infection. Get a LIVE cigarette or cigar and pull your dog's fur back near the tick...and put the hot end of the cigar NEAR the TICK's butt...it will WIGGLE out (WITH it's head... to get free of the heat). I'm not telling you to BURN the tick...just get the heat to cause it to wiggle out! then you can pinch it with tissue and dispose of it.

"OpenYourEyes" steps are fabulous! Except that ticks rarely leave their head in---that's patently not true! But, she's right on about the bacteria, disposal of the tick and washing your hands. & except for the twizzor part & the head...they're dead-wrong!.

& BTW, I'm not suggesting burning the tick...ticks ARE full of deadly bacteria!... But, the HEAT from a hot cigarette or kerosene will cause the tick to back out of your dog...intact! It's so important that the head of the tick does not remain in your dog! Vitally important!!

& hopefully, it's not Preggers!---bcz then you'll have hundreds of ticks to deal with...and your dog will get too weak to scratch! & could die from the bacteria. Even "OpenYour.." said bacteria in the saliva! Saliva is dispersed from the HEAD...isn't it!?!

BTW, your dog's wiping his butt on the floor, bcz the tick is (I believe) IN him, and it itches him! You must GET the tick completely out---use the cigarette method so the tick won't leave it's head in your dog! Hold the hot end up to the tick's butt and it will back out---with it's head! The only other thing that works that I know of, is pouring Kerosene over the tick to get it to back out with it's head.

Do NOT try to remove it with twissors!!!

Other than these home remedies, I guess you'll have to go to the vet & pay lotza $$$ bcz they'll call it surgery. Use the hot cigar...we did it on the farm for YEARS! successfully!
