My great German Shepherd dog recently passed away:( Now i am working on getting a new dog. Im thinking of either a Doberman Pinscher or a Rottweiler. I know it's not to judge weather which dog is better since you have to train it. But which type do you think is better to have?

Get one from the shelter...save a life! :) You can often find those breeds there. Meet the dogs and choose then.

It's all a matter of what you want. Personally I do like both of the breeds, but after lots of research I decided to go with a Doberman (two months away from getting!) :D

Both breeds will obviously have to be properly, and well, trained since they both have the potential to be threats. The Rottie is usually around 110-130lbs whereas the Dobie is between 65-90lbs (approximates) so that may come into play if you're a slighter build person.

Also with the Doberman, they seem to differ depending on which lines they come from. The "American" ones I've seen appear to be thinner, less muscled and obviously a bit lighter... whereas the European ones are thicker, more muscled and obviously heavier.

According to a few different sites I've checked out the Rottie is ranked at 7th place for canine intelligence whereas the Dobie is ranked at number 5.

It all comes down to personal preference of which you think you can handle, which looks better, and which animals needs you're able to fulfill better. With a dog like a Doberman and Rottweiler: do not jump in head-first! Do as much reasearch as humanly possible so you can have a good canine citizen - not one that will help lead to more breed bans.

if you have to choose between a rottie and a picher (like thats what you would prefer) I would go rottie :) They just seem better in general, they are muscular and not all skinny like :P They would be better. But I also agree you should check out all the dogs at the shelter because I am 100% sure you will FALL in love with at least one of them and think its the best decision you ever made, because your literally saving its life. If nothing impresses you then go with the rottie :P UNLESS you find a Doberman at the shelter :P

I vote rotties.

Dobies can be a bit too high strung for my tastes.

Rotties are a member of the herding group, just like your former GSD. They just need steady consistent training from the moment you get them.

I would rather have a hundred rotties in my training classes I teach than a 100 dobies. But that's just me..
