my cat died some time back and i really miss him, i had him for about 18 years, anyway i really feel alone, i always had a pet when i was at home, but now i have nothing, i need something new but what, i thought about getting a dog, but im always at work,(wouldnt have the time to take him for a run or spend lots of time with him) a cat on the otehr hand is good because they dont need a alot of attention,( heard cats are very independant) but feel bad because my other one has just gone...
i thought about a bird but then ill have o clean out there cage every week, maybe a avairy outside would be good, what do you think?

i then thought about a fish but well fish kind of bore me, what other pets out there could i get, i would love to have a scorpion but have no idea where to get one of those, i live in Australia W.A i dont think we even have those down here, well not the black ones anyway...what do you think would be a good pet?

...bye... thanx have a nice day

I think it is great that you will be getting another pet. Research has shown that people with pets are generally happier than those without a pet. I still think that a cat would be best for you as you already know about cat care and you know you like cats. I know it is sad about what happened to your cat but there are so many cats out there in pounds and animal shelters that get put down each day. I live in NSW but I assume it happens in every state. I had a stray that we fed and then she stayed. About 9 months later she went missing and I used to check for her constantly at the pound and animal shelter (amoung other things to try and find her). One day I went to the pound with a dog lover and while they were looking at dogs I bent down to look at a cat who was in a cage by herself outside. She was so affectionate although I could only get a couple of fingers in the cage to pet her. It was Sunday and reading the information on the white board I read that she would be put down on Tuesday. On Monday I called and asked if she had been adopted. I didn't want to replace my cat and had not given up looking for her so I was hoping she had been adopted, but she hadn't. To cut a long story short, I adopted her. But if I did find my cat I would keep both. I didn't want another cat as I felt that would mean that I was replacing her. I saved this cats life so that made me feel good. But thinking about my situation I realised that my cat could have found another home with someone else and she is happy. I don't want to think of the worst but if so there is no reason why this other cat should die. I have a place at my home for another cat and there is a cat that needs a home. I am so glad I adopted my new cat. I am not saying to go out and just adopt any cat. I had visited the pound over 20 times before I fell in love with this cat. You will know when you find the right one. I know you still miss you cat. And by experience I can tell you that you will be comparing your new cat to your old and feel like you will never love this cat the same amount as you did your last cat but over time that changes. You know you will never forget your cat but that doesn't mean you can never have another cat ever agian. You could be saving another cats life and that is a great feeling. You could try getting a scorpion but that is a big difference to having a cat where you cat pat a cat and they show affection. I can aso recommend a rabbit. They are cute and furry. Although they do need weekly cage cleaning they are very cheap to feed!

I think you should get another cat. A cat involves about the least amount of care and that seems to be what you need. In fact get 2 cats so that they will keep each other company during the day while you are at work. Good luck.

p.s. A scorpion is not a pet....all you can do is look at it. Chinchillas and ferrets are nice too, but involve a lot of clean-up and ferrets even if de-scented smell, but they are fun...they like to take baths and you can train them to use a litter box, but they get into everything!

I know you probably miss your cat and don't want to feel like you are replacing it. But from what you've said I think another cat would still be the best pet for you. All animals need some sort of care and if you are ok with cleaning up after a cat then I think you that is the best pet for you.

I think you should get another cat. I refused to get another dog when my last one died, but I got one as a gift and I love him just LIKE the last, not as if he is replacing the last. I totally get what you are saying about not being sure what to get. If you are a cat person, get another cat. That would be your best option as well if you want something low maintenance. just about all other pets require more time or energy from pet owners and if you can't or dont want to give that time and energy you should get something that won't seem to be neglected. A cat is a perfect option.

How a bout a bird. They won't get bored. You can teach a bird a song. How a bout Over The Rainbow. Ha! Ha! Really, birds are great. One great big cage would be great for flying. I hoped I helped you. I think maybe you should buy a little mat and once a week you can get gloves and wipe the mat till it's all clean for the next week.

I have the perfect pet for you.

A cockatiel.

They talk, they sing, they like to play, they are friendly, they like you to stroke their head for hours, they will sit on your shoulder for hours, they will sleep on your shoulder, they are the perfect pet, they will get upset when you are, they will be happy when you are, they will get upset and bored if they don't see you, they will become attached to you..

They are clean, they don't smell, they like you to clean their cage, they even bath...

They are the perfect pet, I have 4 of them, I absolutely love them. You should get a handtame one. They are the friendly ones. You should know how to take care of them, and they need lots of attention, they get stressed and unhappy if they don't see the sunlight..make you you put them in the sunlight everyday, if its cloudy then no, but cover the cage with a towel or so because if direct sunlight comes to them, they die.

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art37898.asp

This is a page, if you prefer to get a baby cockatiel, you should do this. Cockatiels need plenty of fruits and vegetables, dark vegetables. They eat cockatiel mix, which you can get from any petshop. They should havee large cages, and should be let out everyday! make sure you do that.

Don't try to scare the cockatiel because cockatiels are very wise, and never forget what happened to them in the past.

If you need help in a cockatiel, e-mail me, I'm very experienced in them, and will help you out:)

There are diferent colours of cockatiel, there are gray cockatiels (the common type) lutino (yellow cockatiels) albino (white cockatiels) pied (yellow with grey spots) and looots more.

You should get a grey cockatiel, and a MALE. Female cockatiels do NOT sing, and talk, and they are very shy.

Males are active, and like to play, run arround, fly, talk and sing. Cockatiels do NOT sing like budgies, they don't annoy. They are very special, and once they become attached to you, they will love you for life. They can live up to 25 years, some live 30.

Please do get in touch with me, so I can still help you out, and answer all your questions...and about the cage cleaning, you should put the cage first of all, INDOORS. Remember, a cockatiel does NOT smell, and is very clean. You will have to clean the cage once everyday, if you have a newspaper at the bottom of the cage, or twice a week, if you have birdgrit at the bottom of the cage-you can buy birdgrit (very cheap) from any petshop.

Cockatiels love toys in their cage, make sure you have those.

And for fruits and vegetables, you feed them apple, they LOVE it! but not the apple seeds. For vegetables, kale, is VERY healthy for them.

There are lots more fruits and veg you can feed them too, I will tell you them if you email me, cause I dont think I will have much more space in here!

Ok, remember, a cockatiel is a perfect pet, is much more better that a cat or dog. They are loved, and will love you untill a lifetime.

Guinea pigs are a terrific pet, but they do like to live in a clean environment. They are short lived at about 6 years.

Cats are fabulous as they are solitary, millions are in need of homes. Adopt one as a memorial to your deceased cat. What if your deceased cat a languishd in a shelter waiting for a home and you never came. I do not understand this feeling of betrayal to their previous pet, should you provide a home for a needing animal. Naybe it is because I have always had multiple animals and always added more given the right conditions. I want to be able to care for the ones I have. Now I adopt whole families of needy creatures. My lifelong goal.

It is a tribute to the deceased, not a betrayal. Your cat would not want you to be lonely. What if you passed. Would you not want your cat to find a loving home.

So as a commemoration of your love for cat, adopt a family of needed cats. But please spay and neuter. And donot buy, do not breed.

Do it today.

ADOPT.

we don't own any cats because of all of our other animals (4 dogs, 3 rabbits, 3 ducks, 2 geese, many many chickens, and a guinea pig), but there are cats that live pretty close. but, i think that if you got a duck that was full grown or pretty close to it, it should be safe from a house cat. we have lost a couple but those were to coyotes, and some HUGE owls and hawks we have near our place. unfortunately, there is never a gaurantee with any kind of animal. but they are alot of fun to have. p.s. mckelvey is right about the mess, noise, and flying away. although we personally have never had any who "flew the coop".

Get a pair of rats! I know a lot of people might think they're icky, but they're misinformed. Trust me, I've had nearly every type of small, cage-dwelling pet available, and rats are the best hands down. I've had hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, newts, lizards, snakes, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and short tail opossums, but none compare to rats. Why?

1. Rats are cheap! You can get one at a pet store for around $5, and their food and other supplies are about as inexpensive as any other caged pet. They don't require any special things like bath dust or fancy food.

2. Rats are super easy. They require very little maintenance, and tend to smell less than hamsters and gerbils. Although they're normally nocturnal, they quickly adapt to your schedule, so they won't keep you awake at night. They don't take up much space, either. They're very clean, and don't leave trails of poop or pee everywhere they go like most rodents. In fact, several of mine were even litter box trained, making cage cleaning even easier!

3. Rats are unbelievably friendly. I've been bitten by every pet I've owned, EXCEPT rats. They very, very rarely bite. They take a genuine interest in people, so they enjoy being out to play not only to explore but to really interact with you. Also, they're not super hyper like other pets, so you can actually play with them without having to worry about them running under something and never getting them back.

4. Rats are very smart. Every rat I've owned has known its name and would come when called. Unlike other small animals, they understand the word "no" and can be trained to do almost anything. Mine knew to stay in my room while they were out of their cage, came when I called them, and would go back to their cage when I told them to. Several of mine also knew the names of the people in my family, and would go to whichever one I asked them to!

All in all, rats are a ton of fun. They're much lower maintenance and much less expensive than a cat or dog, but they provide you with just as much affection and are so much fun to play with. They really bond to you just like a cat or dog does and you'd be surprised how human they can seem. They have amazing little personalities and seem to have a sense of humor as well. They like to play but they also like to snuggle, so it's the best of both worlds. Feel free to message me with any questions if you've got some!

Miniature pig.

Intelligent, affectionate, and unique. Can easily be housebroken, aren't particularly messy, and they love your companionship.
